Connect 4 looks and seems simple to play, but if you are well matched with your opponent, the strategy needed to win can reach epic levels! In theory, it’s similar to naughts and crosses, but played on a bigger grid that ends up with way more combinations of moves and more possibilities - in fact there are over four and a half billion possible positions for the pieces to be in!
The blue board is set up in between the two players and they take turns placing their coloured disks into the 6 x 7 vertical grid that stands on a table in front of them. The first one to match four of their colour in a row is a winner, but only if their opponent doesn’t block them first!
Connect 4 has been around since the late 70s, but it’s a game that has enduring appeal. It doesn’t need an internet connection or even batteries, but kids today (and adults) still love to play it for the intense challenge and sheer enjoyment of beating the other player!
